Day 10 (feb 8)

Nothing earth shattering to report.

Roxie-240She allowed me to give her ‘daily scrubbins’ along the back and neck, and you should see how she scrunches up her face in delight when I scrub her head and behind her ears. I still need to lay on the floor before attempting to pet her, but I am easing into touching her while crouched – although not attempting to pet – until she lays down, which she usually does when she is comfortable with a situation.

Once she lays down, I use that as a sign that she is comfortable/at ease enough for me to start petting her legs and work my way to the rest of her. It has become a tradition. :)

Michael got back from the vet with $200 worth of medication for the poor baby! She has giardia, just like her sister, and fleas. So we began feeding her the medication received, which wasn’t as difficult as one would have thought thanks to the invention of “pill pockets”, which were sent along with her [bitter] giardia pills. Eli was SO JEALOUS and would not believe me that he should be happy that he doesn’t have to take those particular pills. So I gave him two treats to counteract the jealousy.

He didn’t even notice that it wasn’t the same thing.

As Michael and I were heading to bed we had a difficult time getting Roxie to follow to the bedroom. In fact, Katie didn’t like the way Roxie was staring at her and decided to reaffirm her status in the chain of command by silently chasing Roxie down the hall and to the kitchen. There was no flying fur, no hissing and no yipping. It was simply a necessary reminder, to Katie’s way of thinking. A few minutes after that, Michael was finally able to get Roxie to follow him and Eli into the bedroom, and by the way Roxie’s tail was wagging, I could tell she wanted to play! So, Michael took that opportunity to play with Eli and try and incorporate her into the action. It didn’t take long for Roxie to have enough, so Michael took the opportunity to give Roxie some good-night scrubbins, which she absolutely loved!

Then it was lights out and a nice and long night’s sleep!

    Hi, Nona and Michael !!
I have been a volunteer at S.P.C. Humane Society since they opened 11 1/2 yrs. ago. It is my “2nd ” home, and I have 2 dogs and 4 cats adopted from there.
I have been following your blog from day 1 about Roxie ( I still call her Sage !! )
Sidney and Roxie were 2 extremely frightened little dogs, but at least, to give me some satisfaction, after several days, they were eating biscuits out of my hand, and of course Melanie’s hand, too !! And , of course, their favorite was fresh -cooked chicken that was brought in by one of our eye doctors here on the peninsula (it was cooked by his wife ).
Anyway, I want to say how overjoyed we were that you took little Roxie, and you are doing an excellent job with her………you are both sooo patient and kind, and you knew from the start that it takes much time and patience and perseverence to socialize her and pull her out of her shell. Melanie keeps me updated on Sidney, also…….the vet tech who took her said she is slowly coming around, also. I surely do appreciate your daily blog, I love to know all the progress !!
When the day finally comes that she will let you hold her, PLEASE kiss the top of her head and little face !! Keep up the fantastic work you are doing with her………..the very best to you, Karen

Thank you for following my blogumentary and commenting. I’m the kind of guy who needs to know that people are actually following along otherwise I lose my momentum. I want to say that you did an excellent job with Roxie because she was willing to eat out of our hand within the first 30 minutes that we had her in our home. That was all your doing. I’ve read enough Jack London novels to know that untrusting dogs don’t trust humans in just half an hour. You did good work and made our job a lot easier. I’ve been a little lax on the blog lately, but that is more work related for me, but I’m trying to keep up. Our dog Eli has been a huge help with Roxie as well. She likes to watch and learn so I think her seeing us pet and play with Eli makes it easier to pet and play with her.
